Close Reading Levels by Lexile

In order to offer your students opportunities to read complex text, as you must do when engaging in close reading, you must be able to locate text that meets the three aspects of text complexity:

  • Qualitative factors which are best measured by a human reader, such as levels of meaning or purpose; structure; language conventionality and clarity; and knowledge demands;
  • Reader and task considerations such as reader variables like motivation, knowledge, and experiences and task variables like purpose and the complexity generated by the task assigned and the questions posed; and
  • Quantitative factors such as readability measures and other scores of text complexity like word length or frequency, sentence length, and text cohesion, that are typically measured by computer software (Lexile and ATOS).

Digital Resources for Finding Appropriate Text

Your Library OPAC: You as a teacher can use AR interest level and book level as your first stop for finding Quantitative Measures and Qualitative measures of a book.

  • Qualitative: Renaissance Learning (AR) assigns an interest level based on a book's content including theme, characterization, and plot. The interest level attached to the book indicates age group appropriateness. LG = Lower Grades (K-3); MG = Middle Grades (4-8); MG+ = Upper Middle Grades (6 and up); and UG = Upper Grades (9-12).
  • Quantitative: Renaissance Learning (AR) assigns Book Levels using the ATOS readability formula.

Find books within a particular reading range using your library OPAC . By using “Power Search” you will be able to search by call number range and by ATOS Level. The book level (a quantitative measure) and the interest level (a qualitative measure) have been included in the cataloging of many of our books. If you would like to search for a particular topic, link to Dewey Decimal Numbers for Kids for a call number range. If you would like to find out the interest level and book level of an item that is not in our library, you can always go to AR Bookfinder.

World Book Online: The articles in World Book have been assigned a Lexile score. Lexile levels are listed in the upper left hand side of each World Book Article. You can also use Advanced Search to find articles within a given Lexile range. While at school, you and your students can link to World Book Online from the Novell Application Launcher.

SIRS Discoverer:  What is SIRS? It is a database of resources for research that have been assigned a Lexile number. These short,  informational articles are appropriate for use in Close Reading Activities. While at school, you and your students can link to SIRS Discoverer from the Novell Application Launcher.

Analyze Your Own Text: You can select text and analyze it using quantitative measures such as ATOS and Lexile. For directions, link to Access to Quantitative Analysis Tools.

Digital Resources for Research

There are many resources  that can be highlighted here. What follows are some features of two RSD resources that you can use right now with your students.

World Book Online  Early World of Learning (PreK through Early Grades), World Book Kids and Enciclopedia Estudantil Hallazgos (K-5), World Book Student (4-9), World Book Discover (Grades 6-12) World Book Advanced (8-12)

  • Early World of Learning: (Pre-K through Early Grades.) Use this resource to teach pre-readers and beginning readers beginning research strategies. Know It is a visual interactive encyclopedia. Watch the World Book Classroom--Early World of Learning Tutorial to find out more about this site.
  • World Book Kids: (Grades K-5) Easy to navigate, with articles written especially for younger students. Full of images, illustrations, maps, science projects, videos and more.
  • World Book Student: (Grades 4-9) More than 40,000 encyclopedia and reference articles. Audios, videos, and animations. Extensive dictionary and atlas. Student activities and educator tools.
  • World Book Discover: (Grades 6-12) A reference resource for students reading below grade level because of language or learning difficulties. Uncluttered interface with easy to understand content. Automated translations into 30 languages. Text-to-speech feature. Timeline and citation builders. World Book Explains videos provide expert answers to questions from kids. The visual dictionary is an especially useful tool for below grade level readers.. 
  • World Book Advanced: (Grades 8-12) More than 25,000 encyclopedia articles, and 10,000 sounds and pronunciations. Thousands of images. Editor-selected websites, and periodical articles. Create your own timeline and save it to "My Research". Research tools including dictionary, atlas, and local and country research guides.There is a collection of primary source documents and full text e-books. Teaching with documents includes lesson plans on teaching with one or more primary documents.
  • Enciclopedia Estudantil Hallazgos (Grades K-5) This is a beginner's Spanish language reference tool. It contains Bi-lingual features that allow users to switch between Spanish and English content. Newspapers from Spanish-speaking countries, activities, and a visual dictionary is included.
  • Citations: Articles provide citations so your students can copy and paste them in the style you choose. (MLA, APA, Harvard)
  • Everyone: Make sure you check out the Educator Tools at each level. For example World Book Student Educator Tools offers Standards Correlations, graphic organizers, lesson plan links, educator links, etc.

SIRS Discoverer: What is SIRS? It is a database of resources for research and Lexiled Informational Text. SIRS editors select 100% full-text content daily from over 2,100 sources. It contains over 40,000 images and illustrations and 9000 monitored web links.

World Book Online <www.worldbookonline.com> and SIRS Discoverer <discoverer.sirs.com> can be accessed from school without a log in by selecting the icon from your Novell Application Launcher. These databases can be accessed away from school by signing in. Get the user name and password from your library assistant and share this information with your students.
